Opa en Oma hebben ruzie. Opa Edouard em Oma Emilie hebben eigenlijk altijd ruzie en de familie bij wie ze inwonen, die van hun dochter, mag er de hele tijd van meegenieten. Oma komt net terug uit Lourdes en zet na een meningsverschil haar maagd van plastic op de televisie. Opa spijkert er prompt een portret van Lenin boven. En dan begint de maagd te huilen. Het dorpje Bazouges in Pays de la Loire blijft er niet onberoerd onder. Tot ongenoegen van Opa Edouard ontstaat er een enorme oploop voor het huis. Zelfs de voetbalvereniging denkt bij de wenende madonna een overwinning te kunnen afsmeken.
De Maria van plastic is een verhaal over een dorp, een familie over broze onderlinge verhoudingen. Het lichte tekenwerk onderstreept de breekbaarheid vann de relaties en geeft de beeldroman een ontroerend, intiem aanzicht.
